Gardening Tips

Take a look at our monthly gardening tips, or scroll down to see the Knights Garden Centres Hardy Plant Guarantee...

 SEPTEMBER

  • If you haven't already done so make sure your berries are netted to prevent your crops being harvested by squirrels and birds
  • To prevent your potted plants from slugs and snails in the summer months, use perforated copper strips around the pot
  • Start to clear away summer bedding and start planting your spring bulbs
  • Add some interest to your garden by planting ornamental grasses
  • Clear up fallen leaves and dead material to avoid diseases developing over the winter
  • September is the ideal time to sow grass seed over patchy or bare lawn

 OCTOBER

  • Prune climbing and rambling roses and attach any new growth to supporting trellis
  • Sweep up leaves before they block up drains and damage lawns
  • Get a compost bin for all the old plant material available in the autumn
  • Pot up some mint for the greenhouse or frame for early shoots in the spring
  • Lift dahlias, gladioli and other half hardy tubers, corms and bulbs for the winter

 NOVEMBER

  • Plant bare-rooted plants and shrubs
  • Clean, scrub down and disinfect the greenhouse
  • Plant tulip bulbs before the end of the month
  • Insulate the greenhouse and check that heating equipment is working
  • Complete lawn mowing and clean and oil mower before storage
  • Mound peat or finely chopped bark around the crowns of hardy fuchsias and other plants that could suffer in a hard frost
